JFK vs. Newark Airport: Advice from Nearly 50 Years of Driving New Jersey Travelers

NJ Airport Travel Tips

Every week, we help New Jersey travelers get to both Newark Liberty International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport. Some are heading to important business meetings. Others are leaving on long-awaited vacations or returning home after international travel.

One of the questions we’re asked most often is simple:

“Should I fly out of Newark or JFK?”

There isn’t one answer that fits every traveler.

After providing private airport car service throughout New Jersey since 1978, we’ve found that the right airport depends on far more than which one is closest.

Newark Isn’t Always the Answer… and Neither Is JFK

For many travelers throughout Northern New Jersey, Newark Liberty is the natural first choice. It’s closer, offers excellent domestic and international service, and is often the easiest airport to reach.

But proximity isn’t everything.

If you’re flying internationally, traveling on a specific airline, or searching for the best nonstop route, JFK may offer better options. Many overseas destinations simply have more nonstop service from Kennedy than Newark.

We often encourage clients to compare both airports before booking airfare. Sometimes the additional drive to JFK is worthwhile if it means avoiding a connection or finding a better departure schedule.

The Biggest Mistake We See Has Nothing to Do with the Airport

People often assume missing a flight happens because of traffic.

In our experience, that’s rarely the real problem.

The biggest mistake is waiting until the morning of the flight to arrange transportation.

Rideshare services can be a convenient option, but availability changes constantly and drivers can cancel accepted trips. When that happens an hour before your flight, finding another vehicle becomes much more difficult, especially during busy travel periods or early morning departures.

Planning your airport transportation ahead of time removes one more unknown from your travel day and gives you one less thing to think about before your flight.

Give Yourself More Time Than You Think You’ll Need

Another conversation we have regularly involves pickup times.

Every so often, a client asks us to schedule their ride based on the latest possible departure from home instead of the airline’s recommended arrival time.

We understand why. Nobody enjoys sitting at the airport longer than necessary.

But traffic accidents, construction, weather, disabled vehicles, and other unexpected delays can happen on any route into Newark, JFK, or LaGuardia. Those are variables no transportation provider can control.

Our recommendation is always the same:

Build your schedule around the airline’s recommended arrival time, not the absolute latest time you think you can leave.

Spending an extra 30 minutes at the gate is almost always better than watching your flight board while you’re still on the highway.

Both Airports have Pros & Cons

After thousands of airport transfers, we’ve noticed each airport tends to fit a different type of traveler.

Newark Liberty is often the easiest choice for New Jersey residents. The shorter drive and convenient highway access make it especially popular for business travel and frequent flyers, but it’s coverage is not as widespread as Kennedy – especially when it comes to international travel.

JFK is frequently the better option for international travel. While getting there requires more planning, the airport’s extensive international network often gives travelers more airline choices and nonstop destinations. However, there’s a lot of construction and getting in and out of JFK takes time.

Neither airport is “better.”

The best airport is the one that best matches your destination, airline, and travel plans.

Even Our Chauffeurs Notice the Difference

One question we’ve laughed about over the years is which airport our chauffeurs would choose if given the option.

The answer is almost always Newark or LaGuardia.

Not because JFK isn’t an excellent airport, but because reaching Kennedy from New Jersey typically involves heavier congestion, more bridge and tunnel traffic, and ongoing roadway construction that can add time to the trip.

That doesn’t make JFK a bad choice. It simply means trips to Kennedy require more planning than trips to Newark.

Knowing those differences allows us to schedule pickups appropriately and help our clients avoid unnecessary stress on travel day.

Our Advice Is Simple

Whether you’re flying from Newark Liberty or JFK, a little planning goes a long way.

  1. Reserve your airport transportation before the day of your flight.
  2. Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.
  3. Choose the airport that makes the most sense for your destination, not simply the one that’s closest.

Those three decisions alone can make travel day considerably easier.
